Dr. DeFrancesco graduated from Yale University, and went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where he currently serves as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Ob-Gyn. Dr. DeFrancesco completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Connecticut, and later received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of New Haven. He has been in private practice in Waterbury, CT since 1984. From 1987 through 1995 he served as chairman of the Department of Ob-Gyn at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Dr. DeFrancesco is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and served as the Chair of ACOG's District I from 2006 - 2009. He is now serving as the national Secretary of ACOG, a position he will hold until 2013, and has chaired or served on many ACOG Committees and Task Forces. In addition, Dr. DeFrancesco serves on the Executive Committee of the New England Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and is a past President of the Connecticut Society of American Board Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
With a special interest in patient safety and quality improvement, Dr. DeFrancesco has been a surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) since 1994 and has been on the association's board since 2000. He also served as the AAAHC's president from 2009 to 2010, and has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the AAAHC’s Institute for Quality Improvement since 2001. He has published articles and given talks to professional groups about various clinical and patient safety topics. Prior to his medical career, Dr. DeFrancesco served as a State Representative, and today frequently advocates on behalf of women’s health in Hartford and in Washington, DC.
