Bone Density Testing
Taking care of your bones is vital no matter your age, but it’s especially important to keep an eye on them as you get older. Over time, our bones may weaken, which can lead to osteoporosis. Women are four times more likely than men to develop this condition because of the loss of estrogen (which blocks or slows down bone loss) at menopause – so getting screened is essential.
Most women will be screened for osteoporosis beginning at age 65 and older by bone mineral testing, but sometimes a provider will recommend earlier screening based on family medical history and other factors. Bone density testing helps your provider know what preventative or treatment options are right for you, so you have the best chance of maintaining strong bones.
Benefits of bone density testing:
- Identify decreases in bone density before you break a bone
- Determine your risk of broken bones
- Confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis
- Monitor osteoporosis treatment
