OB/GYN Hospitalist: Independent in Practice. Collaborative by Design.

OUR PROGRAM | A DIFFERENT MODEL OF HOSPITALIST CARE
St. Vincent’s Medical Center supports approximately 1,300 deliveries annually through a collaborative model that balances independent clinical practice, continuity of care, and emergency readiness. Private attending physicians manage approximately 80% of the obstetric workload and retain primary responsibility for their own patients. Rather than routinely accepting sign-outs of the private service, Hospitalists function as readily available clinical partners when emergencies arise, simultaneous needs occur, or the service becomes especially busy. Importantly, Hospitalists also manage their own patients independently – including unassigned and designated service patients – with responsibility for labor, delivery, postpartum care, and appropriate gynecologic management. This preserves clinical autonomy and procedural practice while supporting the broader OB/GYN team.

EXCEPTIONAL IN-HOUSE CLINICAL SUPPORT
OB/GYN advanced practice providers: 24-hour in-house APP coverage Monday through Friday, providing frontline triage, patient evaluation, monitoring, documentation, and coordination of care.
24/7 in-house hospital resources: Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, Trauma Surgery, Medical Hospitalists, and Adult Intensive Care Providers. This multidisciplinary structure supports timely escalation, emergency response, and care of medically complex patients.

TEACHING & PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT
Hospitalists participate in clinical education alongside family medicine residents, medical students, and physician assistant students, including learners affiliated with Quinnipiac University. Teaching provides opportunities for
mentorship and continued professional engagement.

PATIENT SAFETY & QUALITY
St. Vincent’s Medical Center has received a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade of A, an external recognition that complements the program’s emphasis on teamwork, clinical readiness, and safe patient care.
