Pregnancy Planning: Preparing For The Expected and Unexpected
A healthy pregnancy begins with preconception planning and extends beyond delivery. Being healthy before becoming pregnant can improve your chances of getting pregnant and help prevent pregnancy complications. During this appointment, your Women's Health Connecticut provider will:
- Conduct a complete physical exam, including weight, blood pressure, pelvic exam, etc.
- Ask questions about your family medical and personal health history, and may recommend further testing (such as genetic testing for certain conditions)
- Ensure your vaccinations are up-to-date
You can schedule a preconception appointment at any time, even if you've previously had a baby and want to grow your family. This is a great first step towards a healthy pregnancy.
The Importance of Prenatal Doctor Appointments
Regular prenatal care is crucial during your pregnancy to monitor both your health and your baby’s well-being. Early detection of any issues or complications ensures prompt intervention and support, including assistance with breastfeeding and other postpartum counseling.
In a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, you can expect check-ups approximately every four weeks during the first two trimesters, and then more frequently—typically every one to two weeks—in the final trimester. During these appointments, your provider will monitor your baby's growth and ensure your overall well-being. This includes:
- Check your blood pressure and weight, and measuring your abdomen to document the baby's growth
- Take blood and urine samples for lab work
- Check the baby's heart rate (during later appointments)
Prenatal appointments keep both you and the baby in good health, and gives your provider ample time to help you prepare for delivery.
High-Risk Pregnancies
Complications can arise or certain conditions may lead to a high-risk pregnancy. A high-risk pregnancy means there is an increased likelihood of health problems for you or your baby before, during, or after delivery. Several factors may classify a pregnancy as high-risk:
- Age: Individuals younger than 20 or older than 35
- Health conditions: Obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, thyroid disease, etc.
- Lifestyle choices: Smoking, using illegal drugs, or consuming alcohol
- Pregnancy with multiples
- Complications arising during pregnancy
Perinatology, a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology, focuses on managing pregnancies that are or could become high-risk due to issues affecting the mother or fetus. Physicians who specialize in perinatology, also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, undergo specialized training beyond obstetrics and gynecology. We have relationships with experienced perinatologists who provide the highest standard of care in the state.
