Maternal Screenings for Birth Defects

During pregnancy, prenatal screening helps identify genetic disorders that can be passed on to a child. Your provider will discuss your options as well as the risks and benefits.

Depending on ethnicity and family history, your clinician may suggest these screenings:

  • Chorionic Villus Sampling
  • First Trimester Screen
  • Maternal Serum Alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) or Quad Screen
  • Down Syndrome
  • Neural Tube Defects - Spinal Bifida
  • Trisomy 18 and 13
