Position Summary: The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing clinical nursing support and patient care services within an outpatient midwifery practice setting and birth center. This role assists providers in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care through clinical assessments, patient education, care coordination and follow-up management for OB/GYN patients. The Registered Nurse (RN) performs a variety of clinical duties including prenatal intake, phone triage, medication management, diagnostic testing coordination, and preventative care follow-up.
Office responsibilities:
- Nursing liaison between patients and health care professionals
- Patient history intake/ assessment and preparation
- Conduct prenatal intake appointments, including collection of patient medical history, medication reconciliation and patient education regarding prenatal care.
- Preform non-stress tests (NSTs) and monitor fetal well-being in accordance with the providers
- Administer injections, immunizations, and prescribed medications
- Perform venipuncture and blood specimen collection for laboratory testing
- Assess and manage patient concerns related to urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Provide phone triage for patients by assessing symptoms, prioritizing care needs, and communicating appropriate recommendation under the providers’ guidance and supervision
- Review, communicate and document laboratory and diagnostic test results in coordination with providers
- Process medication refill requests and complete prior authorizations in accordance with provider direction and insurance requirements
- Coordinate referral management
- Manage pap smear and mammogram recall processes to support preventive care compliance and patient follow-up
- Coordinate prenatal and estimated date of confinement (EDC) related testing/tracking
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation with the EMR
- Assist providers as needed during patient visits with physical exam or procedures
- Advise patients of recommended actions/course of treatment as directed by providers
- Medication administration
- Lab assessment/data collection
- Document patient care and results in medical record in concise and timely manner
- Advanced telephone triage functions
Facility/Birth Center Responsibilites
- Provide labor support to patients admitted for delivery
- Assist midwife during delivery and immediate postpartum
- Ensure all equipment and supplies are prepared for delivery
- Monitor vital signs and perform intermittent auscultation per protocol during labor
- Assign APGAR scores in collaboration with the midwife and assist midwife in neonatal resuscitation as needed
- Alert midwife to abnormal findings
- Document in patient record during labor, delivery and postpartum
- Responsible for medication reconciliation
- Perform blood draws and specimen handling (i.e. cord blood, placenta)
- Prepare and administer IV, IM and PO medications
- Provide patient education, discharge teaching, and lactation support
- Proficient in POC testing: glucometer, TCB meter
- Proficient in newborn screening: CCHD, hearing screen, metabolic screen
- Communicate with pediatricians as needed
- Sanitize and restock rooms, remove trash/soiled linens, and sterilize instruments after patient discharge
Skills/qualifications:
- Current CT RN license
- Minimum of 1-2 years OB/GYN or Women’s Health nursing experience
- Labor and Delivery experience preferred
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and patient care coordination skills.
- Experience with phone triage, medication management and patient education is preferred.
- Knowledge of prenatal care processes, women’s health services and preventative screening guideline preferred.
- Proficiency in EMR systems and standard computer applications.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to follow established clinical workflows and protocols.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills.
- NRP and BLS certification every 2 years
