About Stephanie Welsh, CNM, DNP, FACNM
Stephanie Welsh has been a certified nurse-midwife in full-scope practice since 2003, and an Assistant Professor of the Practice at the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies at Fairfield University since 2020.
Dr. Welsh currently serves as the workforce chair for the Connecticut affiliate of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and sits on several public health and women’s health advocacy committees. Her research interests include newborn placental transfusion, waterbirth, and midwifery workforce issues. Prior to her career in midwifery, she worked as a photojournalist until 1999. Her journalism honors include the 1996 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography, and awards from World Press Photo and NPPA’s Pictures of the year. Her photographs have been featured in the permanent collections of The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St Lawrence University and The Newseum in Washington, DC. Combining her two careers, she has lectured widely on issues of women’s health, gender-based violence, and about the social, physical, clinical and psychological consequences of female genital cutting.
Dr. Welsh holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice from UConn, a Master of Science in Nursing from Yale University, and a BS in Communications from Syracuse University.
