The Acessa procedure, also known as laparoscopic uterine fibroid radiofrequency thermal ablation, is a minimally invasive outpatient treatment that destroys living fibroid tissue using a thin needle through three small abdominal incisions. The energy used during the procedure heats the fibroid tissue causing it to soften and shrink over time. This allows fibroid symptoms such as heaving bleeding, pressure, or pain to improve with no suturing of the uterine tissue. Additionally, the body’s natural process gradually reabsorbs the fibroid into surrounding tissue in the uterus.
This technology is unique amongst fibroid treatments in that it allows the following:
Patients can keep their uterus.
There is a quick return to work or daily activities (usually less than 2 weeks).
There is minimal discomfort after the procedure.
There is high satisfaction among patients.
It is important to know that depending on the size and location of fibroids, Acessa may not be an appropriate option for everyone. All treatment options for intrauterine issues have benefits, warnings, precautions, and risks and this should be discussed with someone who performs the procedure.
